PAST, PROCESS AND PASSION
Astwood was first conceived in 2010 as a consultancy business, specialising in financial analysis and modelling. Yet, with eight years’ experience spread across a variety of industries, Astwood has naturally diversified. Since its creation, Astwood has developed expertise in engineering, design and due diligence.
In recent years Astwood’s primary focus has been to find innovative solutions to problems within the environmental sector. This has ultimately kindled a passion for renewable energy and sustainable production. We are now a multi-discipline team who research ideas within this area, taking technologies from concept through to full commericalisation.
We work with technology partners, alongside our own research and development team, to take schemes from ‘initial concept’ to ‘full commercial operation’. The project life-span, which typically lasts several years, begins with constructing a comprehensive commercial model of a proposed technology based on robust testing of key assumptions.
Once the technical design has been signed off a pilot plant is constructed and operated as proof of concept. With funding sought and secured, intermediate sized facilities are added to the pipeline, used to evaluate the commerciality and examine the scalability of the technology. We are then either in a position to operate our own full-scale commercial facilities or to assist third-parties wanting to do the same.
We share a belief that “waste is just a resource in the wrong hands.” Our systems are designed to extract maximum value from their wasted resources, with the aim of being as regenerative as possible. Resourcefulness is the essence of our business, be it minimising the material input and energy consumption of our systems or exploring sustainable packaging and transport options for our products.
Our end goal is simple; to create a ‘circular economy’: a system which recovers and recycles its own sources of energy and materials. Our first step towards this has been to use wasted heat from the LED lights in our vertical farm, Vertivore, to brew craft beers in our adjoining brewery, Lab Culture.
What People Say
“Sustainability can’t be like some sort of a moral sacrifice or political dilemma or a philanthropical cause. It has to be a design challenge.”
